KOLKATA: INDIA'S FIRST BUSINESS CAPITAL
From its founding as a trading post in 1690 by Job Charnock of the East India Company, Calcutta grew to become the most important commercial city in all of Asia — a port through which half of Britain's trade with the Orient once passed.
The city gave India its first stock exchange, founded in 1875 — predating even Bombay's. It housed the great jute mills of the Hooghly industrial belt, the coal mines of the Damodar Valley, the tea gardens of Darjeeling, and the finest counting houses in the Empire.
Marwari merchants, Bengali industrialists, Parsi traders and British managing agencies built an economy of unparalleled scale. In its golden era, Calcutta was not merely wealthy — it was the engine of an entire subcontinental economy.
The question before us today is not whether Kolkata can lead again — it is whether we will seize the moment that history has handed us.

Why we decided to print a magazine in 2026.
There is a quiet revolution happening in the cafes of Lake Gardens and the co-working spaces of Sector V. For years, the narrative has been that to build a massive company, you had to leave Kolkata. You had to go West or South.
But over the last 24 months, we’ve watched a shift. The founders staying behind aren't doing it out of stubbornness; they're doing it because they've realized the *Adda* culture—the free-flowing exchange of radical ideas—is actually an incredible incubator for early-stage tech.
